Baldwin is a hamlet (and a census-designated place) located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The population was 23,455 at the 2000 census.
Baldwin is also a station on the Long Island Rail Road. As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 23,455 people, 7,868 households, and 6,081 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,069.8/km (7,954.4/mi). There were 7,999 housing units at an average density of 1,046.9/km (2,712.8/mi). The racial makeup of the CDP was 71% White, 20% African American, 0.32% Native American, 7.30% Asian, 03% Pacific Islander, 4.60% from other races, and 3.03% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were .60% of the population.
There were 7,868 households out of which 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.0% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.7% were non-families. 18.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.98 and the average family size was 3.40.
